Scanning Tricks & Tips

by George Salter - SalterQuest.com

My Settings on my Scanner - Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Series - It has a light both on the bottom and in the lid
.. so that you can scan negitives with the setting on Transparency.

Set it to 24-bit Color. Yes even if you are doing a black & white. I always scan the origional with all of it's inperfections
.. and I save that as a huge *.PSD file for Photoshop.

Next step. I then scan it for an 8x10 color print
Then. I scan it at 300 dpi wide for my webpage thumbnail photo.
I'll then.. reset it to the 8x10 size and crop it to a 5x7 color format.
After the origionals set is finished I make my Black & Whites.

Black & Whites are created in Photoshop. I drop out all the color information by selecting "Grayscale"
... In Photoshop 7 - Image tab - Mode - grayscale

When the image is converted to black & white with the grayscale selected you should go into the settings
...to increase the brightness (up 7) and the contrast (up 10 to 25 depending on what you think looks good).

Remember that this process is not an Art it's a Science and that it's not a Science it's an Art. In other words
this requires your artful eye and technical know how to deal with the technology of the hardware as well
as the software.

I figure it takes me about 15 minutes for each photo set to scan and once I've placed it on the site I've
invested about 20 to 25 minutes into that single image. It's not to make it perfect it to make it as near
to the origional as possable and after time some of that is going to be guess work.

If you plan on doing your own scanning more power to you. Call me anytime for help at: 760-580-3276 cell
I am usually up until midnight and my cell service is free after 9pm PST and it's free for me on Weekends.
At present I am on the AT&T network but my contract is up in July and I may switch services. Which one
do you like and which one do you hate..

Thanks for helping get this service off the launch pad.

most efficient way to get them on their way.

Origional Size of Print

Recommended Scanning to get to 8x10
DPI (Dots Per Inch) Scanner Setting..

Special considerations for this scan dpi.

Wallet size print 3200 or higher 6400 dpi won't hurt but it does take some time.
4x5 print 1200 or higher Not a problem going to 8x10
5x5 print 800 or higher Not a problem going to 8x10
5x7 print 720 or higher Not a problem going to 8x10
8x10 print 350 or higher Not a problem going to 8x10

Why the different DPI's? Basicly the idea here is to get the image as sharp as you can when you go from a
small print size and make it into a larger size. For example, if you have a good 5x7 and you want to make
it into an 8x10 image you will need to scan it at 720 dpi to come close to the same quality.

Wallet to 8x10? It's possible. I usually scan at 6400 dpi when I do wallets because I am always looking
for a sharper image.
